The Sharks split their two-game series against the Phoenix Coyotes by coming from behind to win last night in overtime. Alex Bourret got the first goal of the night at 5:41 in the first, with Olli Jokinen assisting, and a Jokinen goal later in the period put the Coyotes up 2-0 (Mikkel Boedker, by the way, assisted on the Jokinen goal - expect to see more from this kid, after his 2 goal night last night). Tomas Plihal got the Sharks on the board with the only goal of the second period - Jeremy Roenick and Jody Shelley got the assists.
The third period is where it really started to heat up - Patrick Marleau evened it for the Sharks about a minute and a half into the period, but Garth Murray put the Coyotes back in the lead nine minutes later. Fortunately, Devin Setoguchi (who assisted with Joe Thornton on Marleau's goal) tied it 3-3 with a goal just a minute later (Thornton and Marleau assisting), which sent the Sharks into overtime. Joe Thornton put the cap on the evening with his goal, 3:03 into the O.T.
First-round draft pick (2004) Al Montoya stopped 31 of 35 shots he faced for Phoenix, while Evgeni Nabokov stopped 14 of 17 shots. Once again, the Sharks led the Coyotes in shots on goal AND in faceoff wins (33 to 17) - but almost lost their third straight game.
The Sharks travel to Vancouver tomorrow to take on the Canucks - time for revenge.
