Russian NHL prospect Alexei Cherepanov dead at 19

Numerous hockey outlets are reporting this breaking story, but 19-year old New York Rangers prospect Alexei Cherepanov died today after collapsing on the bench next to his KHL teammate, former Ranger superstar Jaromir Jagr. He was taken to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Both Cherepanov and Jagr play for the KHL team Avangard Omsk, in southwestern Siberia. They were playing Chekhov Vityaz. Other NHL alumni playing for Avangard Omsk include one-time Tampa Bay goaltender John Grahame, Alexandr Svitov, Jakub Klepis, and former L.A. Kings player Pavel Rosa.

Cherepanov was drafted in the 1st round (17th overall) of the 2007 NHL entry draft. Earlier this month, he set a team scoring record, for having goals in 6 consecutive games.
